The Ohio Auction School is accepting applications for the September 7 – 16 Auctioneer Training hosted at EJ’s Auction & Consignment in Glendale

This training is for students interested in lucrative careers as auctioneers.

A career in auctioneering can be a very interesting and rewarding occupation.  The variety of real and personal property that an auctioneer encounters is alone more interesting than what many jobs offer.  Yet, the true fascinating part of an auctioneer’s job is the people.

Nobody is born knowing how to be an auctioneer.  All auctioneers are trained, either by their family members or by formal classroom training.  Once you complete our training, you too will know how to be a successful auctioneer.

Studies show that over 57% of all Americans have attended a live auction.  Further, with the Internet, there is more awareness than ever of what auctions are and how they work.  Therefore, with more and more people familiar with auctions, more consumers understand the power of auction marketing, and desire the assistance of an auctioneer.

But there’s a lot more involved in being an auctioneer than simply being able to chant. For those interested in exploring this growth industry, EJ’s Auction & Consignment in Glendale will host a pre-licensing course designed to train aspiring auctioneers Monday, Sept. 7 through Wednesday, Sept. 16.

The 85-hour course will be taught at EJ’s by certified instructors of The Ohio Auction School, which is recognized by the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) as one of the nation’s most prestigious auction schools. Of particular note: 2015 World Automobile Auctioneers Championship (WAAC) champion auctioneer Bobby D. Ehlert, of Phoenix, will be among one of the instructors.

Enrollment for the $1,150 course is open now and students registering prior to August 31st will save $150. Upon completion of the class, students will be prepared for entry level careers as auctioneers.

Auctioneering can be a lucrative career path for those who pursue it. Forty-five percent of auctioneers report a gross income of more than $100,000 per year.

With only a handful of auction schools in the western United States, most people have to travel long distances to acquire the appropriate training.

“We recognize that it can be difficult for students to travel to Ohio for our classes,” said Mike Brandly, executive director of The Ohio Auction School. “We’re excited to be in Arizona in September to bring the training to those who may not otherwise be able to attend.”

Erik Hoyer, owner of EJ’s Auction & Consignment, left an established career in the construction industry, where he owned two businesses, to try his hand at auctioneering. He attended a course by The Ohio Auction School at a venue in Prescott eight years ago to get his start, and he now runs one of the largest auction houses in the Valley.

“This industry is exploding, and it will only grow more as Baby Boomers and their parents downsize or liquidate their estates,” Hoyer said. “Whether you’re in your 20s and just starting your career, or you’re making a mid-life change, there are ample opportunities in the auction industry.”

Like Hoyer, many people who enter the auction industry have a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Being your own boss is an attractive benefit, and more than 80 percent of auctioneers report being the primary bid callers at their own businesses.

In addition to bid calling, auctioneers oversee every aspect of their businesses, including meeting with clients, cataloging and preparing items for auction, marketing and running the auction itself.
